I have to say I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with the introduction to this class. However when I first started reading I never would have thought Plato, Sacrates and Danto would be someone to look at and study for an art course.
In Plato, Socrates talkes about stories and when the story gives a bad image it is like a painter painting something that looks nothing like what he is actually trying to paint. What I get from this excerpt is that Socrates is talking about the stories and storytellling that creates images that are not always true. Poems, stories, and storytelling is a form of art. People seem to precieve things they way they are presented, whether it be through a story or in a painting.
But is it the same kind of art one thinks of when a person says "art"?
Philosophy and art have never been connected to me. When I think of the two I don't find them together. John Dewey talked about how hard it is for us humans to think of philosophy and art together. I am still curious as to how they do go together and why we are reading these in aesthetics.
In Danto, Hamlet and Socrates explain how they view reflective surfaces in art. A painter is mearely painting what he sees, and to Socrates, a mirror was the best association to him. Danto goes on to describe the theory of art, as well as Roger Fry. These influenced and got me thinking of how we view paintings as a whole.
I found these readings still somewhat confusing after having read them. And it left me with some questions,
What is aesthetics?
How do these readings tie into learning about aesthetics and why?
How does the reading on Socretes in Plato really go hand in hand with art, or how is it connected?
What are these theories and how does the average person apply them?
Are the theories still used/believed today?
Overall I am feeling quite confused and overwhelmed. This first reading just seemed to confuse me more. I am interested to see how class goes and if things are explained more indepth.
